Imposter: the word game to play with friends

Imposter is a quick party game of bluffing and clues. Everyone at the table gets the same secret word, except the imposter, who only learns the category. Then you take turns saying one word each. The crew wants to prove they know the word without giving it away; the imposter has to blend in. After the clues, everyone votes. How to play imposter

  1. Pick the number of players and imposters, and the word packs.
  2. Pass the phone. Each player taps the card to see their role in private, then hides it and passes it on.
  3. Starting with the named player, everyone says one clue word out loud. Two rounds of clues make it harder to hide.
  4. Talk it over (set a timer if you like), then count to three and everyone points at their suspect.
  5. Tap the player with the most votes. If it is the imposter, they get one guess at the word from eight choices.

Scoring: when the crew catches the imposter, every crew member gets a point. If the imposter escapes, through a wrong vote or a tie, each imposter gets two. A caught imposter who guesses the word steals the round for three. Scores carry over, round after round.

Play online with friends

Not in the same room? Tap With friends, make a room for three to six players and share the invite link on WhatsApp. Each player sees their own card on their own phone and the app runs the clue turns and the secret vote. Say your clue out loud on a call (or across the room), then tap Said it aloud. Chat in the room is emoji only. More than six of you? Pass one phone instead.

Imposter game with hints

New players often freeze when they are the imposter. Switch on Hints and the imposter also gets one related word, a gentle nudge towards the right area. Turn it off again once everyone knows the game.

As crew, pick a clue that only someone who knows the word would think of, but not so obvious that the imposter can guess it. As the imposter, listen first, then echo the mood of the clues. Two imposters do not know each other, so watch your back.

Three is enough, and twelve still works when you pass one phone. Online rooms seat three to six, and computer players can fill empty seats.
